28th July 2006: Learning Stone closes in Carrara: A postgraduate course in the use of stone for Saudi architects: The 14 students of the Architectural Faculty of King Saud University in Riyadh, who have attended the Postgraduate course in the use of stone called “Learning stone in Carrara”, have finished their course and, during a ceremony in the premises of Internazionale Marmi e Macchine, have received from the president and CEO of Internazionale Marmi e Macchine, Giancarlo Tonini and Paris Mazzanti, the certificates that say they are experts in and ambassadors of the use of marble in the Middle East.
“It is not the first training course in the use of stone that we have held in Carrara – highlighted the CEO of IMM, Paris Mazzanti, during the ceremony – because by now our company boasts a sound tradition in the training of young architects, to whom we teach how to select and apply stone materials and the classical, modern and cutting-edge laying and processing techniques. It is an institutional task that we carry out and for which we are appreciated and praised by operators and professionals from all over the world...more
26th July 2006: Import/exports of Italian marble and granite growing again: Made in Italy finished products growing again. The United States and Europe are the leading markets for the first quarter of 2006 as well. Positive signs from the Far East and, despite everything, from the Middle East. Machinery exports also on the rise.
In the period January to April 2006, Italy exported overall 1 million 440 thousand tons of raw and finished marble, granite, travertine, in different shapes and types, for a value of nearly 560 million euros (see enclosed Table), and imported a little less than 1 million tons of stone products, worth nearly 195 million euros. Compared with the exports for the same period in 2005, we can see a slight growth in quantity (+1%) and a more substantial rise in value (+9%) and a growth in imports by volume (+0.7%) and even more by value (+11.7%).
These figures have been published by Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara that, as usual, has processed the statistics from ISTAT, the Central Statistics Office, about the domestic import/exports of stone for the first quarter of 2006, comparing them with those for the same period of 2005, to assess the industry trends...more

24th July 2006: Euroroc: Milestone reached: One item is always at the top of the agenda at all conferences of the Euroroc member countries: The spread of the European-wide logo for labelling real natural stone. Whether “Natur Stein” in the German-speaking regions, “Pietra Autentica” in Italy or “Piedra Natural” on the Spanish market – the campaign co-ordinated by Euroroc is having an effect. At the last meeting in Murcia, the director of the Italian association Assomarmomacchine, Raimondo Lovati, reported that the participation of Ardesia Mangini and Marmi Bruno Zanet now means that 100 Italian companies are licence holders and use the logo actively...more
19th July 2006: Italian marble and stone exports and imports in 2005: The balance is still negative, but some signs of recovery emerge, to be made the most of: The trade balance of the stone industry is still (slightly) on the decrease, but signs of recovery emerge in the internationals scenario that the Italian companies can make the most of. These are the findings of Internazionale Marmi e Macchine (IMM), as stated in its yearly survey, announced during the international marble fair CarraraMarmotec. Compared with 2004, in 2005 Italy exported over 4.7 million tons (+1.1) of marble, granite and stones worth 1.77 billion euros (-0.5%) and imported 3 million tons (+1.3%) worth 552 million euros (+ 4.08%)...more
19th July 2006: Mario Botta: Stone, to resist the ephemeral: The great architect swears eternal love to marble and arouses the enthusiasm of the audience of the International Fair of Carrara. To design properly, it takes a new Renaissance. “Stone, to resist the trivialisation and the ephemeral that rule the world of design. These big marble blocks arouse in every architect powerful feelings, the attraction to use it for a present that will continue over time, that is, for the future”...more
13th July 2006: PIEDRA 2006: The fair welcomed some 29,000 professionals, a 7.4% increase compared to the last edition: The sixth edition of the International Natural Stone Fair, PIEDRA 2006, closed its doors last 13th May. This event presented an especially strong international dimension and achieved some highly favourable results. The fair, which featured the participation of some 873 direct exhibitors and represented companies and presented a net exhibition area measuring 26,267 square metres throughout Halls 4, 6, 8 and 10 at FERIA DE MADRID, welcomed the largest number of visitors in its history, 29,000 in all. This figure represents a 7.4% increase compared to the last edition and confirms the considerable interest that this event generates among professionals from the industry.
This overall figure includes visitors who exclusively visited PIEDRA, which on this occasion came to 17,407 professionals - a 6.2% increase with respect to PIEDRA 2004 -, as well as groups of students, guests and a percentage of visitors from VETECO who, given the coincidence and shared exhibition contents of the two fairs, also attended PIEDRA.
Portugal, Italy, France, the United States and the United Kingdom were the main countries of origin of the foreign buyers who attended the fair.
Another of the characteristics of PIEDRA 2006 was its outstanding international scope, both in terms of supply and demand. In this respect, we might highlight the fact that 41% of the exhibiting companies at this edition were of foreign origin and that the attendance of foreign buyers accounted for 11.5% of the total visitor figure, which represents an 8.3% increase compared to PIEDRA 2004. All of this was backed by a number of promotional campaigns, return trade missions organised by regional export bodies and the fair´s International Buyers Programme, organised in collaboration with the Chamber of Trade and Industry of Madrid, which, once again this year, proved to be a highly effective tool...more
