  • 21st September 2006: New countries – new markets: Italy in 4th position - Russia is the market of the future The major players in the natural stone markets have dramatically changed in a short space of time. Italy as main producer and Germany as main customer have been replaced by China and the USA respectively. Other countries have long been in the fast lane. Italy is still the yardstick for many people in the natural stone industry – and certainly rightly so – in some respects. No other country in the world has such a broad, in-depth know-how of stone quarrying and processing based on centuries of experience. However, other countries have caught up rapidly and are making life difficult for the Italians, who were previously accustomed to success. In the mass production segment, China and India have meanwhile taken over the market leadership...more
  • 21st September 2006: Gem in London: New jewellery department of Harrods with onyx panels According to the plans of Czech architect Eva Jiricna, the interior design for the jewellery department of Harrods also utilizes the liveliness of the stone as well as glass elements. The customer walks through a tunnel clad in black marble before entering the actual sales room. The room is enclosed with back-lit wall cladding of honey-yellow onyx alternating with mirrors and glass showcases, with plain sales counters covered with beige leather winding their way through the room. The onyx panels act as room dividers and provide light. Only a strip of ceiling lights with lights at individual points provides additional illumination of the room...more

Trend scouts and trend-setters are becoming increasingly important in the natural stone industry. Colour varieties are also subject to fashion trends in this industry! One of today’s trends is towards high-quality products – in terms of material selection and working and in the combination of different materials and colours. The haptic of the finish is increasingly important...more
  • 11th September 2006: Collective trademark: The European “NATURAL STONE” logo highlighted at fairs The constant increase in adoption of the “Natural Stone” logo, a collective trademark for companies Europe-wide, is also due to the growing visibility it is getting at major sector events. “Natural Stone” (“Pietra Autentica” in Italian) is the European logo distinguishing authentically natural marbles, granites and other stones from the artificial or fabricated, and is an idea born in 2004 to safeguard the stone sector and promote its products...more
